Background of the Study
Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue, leading to increased fracture risk. Postmenopausal women are particularly susceptible due to decreased estrogen levels. Nurses play a pivotal role in the early detection, prevention, and management of osteoporosis through patient education, screening, and promoting lifestyle modifications.
In Nigeria, osteoporosis is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. The University of Benin Teaching Hospital, as a major healthcare facility, is instrumental in providing care to postmenopausal women. Assessing nurses' awareness and management practices is essential to improve patient outcomes and inform policy decisions.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the importance of osteoporosis management, there is limited research on nurses' awareness and practices regarding osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Preliminary observations suggest potential gaps in knowledge and practice, which may affect the quality of care provided. This study aims to evaluate nurses' awareness and management practices concerning osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of awareness among nurses regarding osteoporosis and its management in postmenopausal women.
2. To evaluate the current practices employed by nurses in managing osteoporosis in this population.
3. To identify barriers hindering effective management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Research Questions
1. What is the current level of awareness among nurses about osteoporosis and its management in postmenopausal women?
2. What practices are currently employed by nurses in managing osteoporosis in postmenopausal women?
3. What challenges do nurses face in effectively managing osteoporosis in this population?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital possess adequate awareness regarding osteoporosis and its management in postmenopausal women.
2. There is a significant relationship between nurses' awareness levels and their management practices concerning osteoporosis.
3. Identifiable barriers negatively affect the effective management of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on registered nurses working in orthopedic and gynecology units at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital. Data will be collected through structured questionnaires and interviews to assess awareness levels, management practices, and perceived barriers. Limitations may include self-reporting biases and the study's confinement to a single institution, which may affect the generalizability of findings.
